Work out the sale price and your savings from an original price and a percent-off discount. Handy at checkout, during sales, and for comparing offers that mix percentages with fixed amounts.

Discount calculator

Enter the original price and the discount percentage to get the sale price and how much you save. Sale price = price × (1 − discount ÷ 100).

Sale price: 60

You save: 20

Formula

sale price = original price × (1 − discount% ÷ 100)

Example: 25% off 80: 80 × (1 − 0.25) = 60, so you save 20.

Checking a sale before you pay

Sale tags love percentages because they hide the actual number. A quick mental version: 10% is the price with the decimal moved one step left, so 20% off an 80 price is 2 × 8 = 16 off. For anything less tidy — 35% off 249 — the calculator is faster than the tag is honest.

Watch out for stacked discounts: “an extra 10% off already-reduced items” applies to the reduced price, not the original. 20% off followed by 10% off is 28% off in total, not 30%, because the second discount works on a smaller number.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discount without a calculator?
Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then scale: for 20% double it, for 5% halve it. For example, 30% off 250 is 3 × 25 = 75 off, leaving 175.
Do stacked discounts add up?
No. An extra 10% off an item already reduced by 20% gives a total of 28% off, not 30%, because the second discount applies to the already-lowered price.
Is this calculated locally?
Yes. Like every Everyday Kit tool, the math runs in your browser and nothing you type is uploaded.
