Frequently asked questions

How does this tool count a word?
A word is a run of letters, numbers, apostrophes, or hyphens. “don’t” and “well-known” each count as one word. Extra spaces do not add extra words.
Why do character counts differ from Microsoft Word?
Word sometimes treats line breaks or selected text differently. This counter reports every character in the box, then a second total that ignores whitespace.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Counting happens in your browser. Closing the tab clears the text from this page.
