- Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC instead of JPG?
- Since iOS 11, iPhones default to HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) because it stores the same quality in roughly half the file size of JPG. You can make the iPhone shoot JPG directly under Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible.
- Are my photos uploaded when I convert them here?
- No. The HEIC decoder runs inside your browser (via WebAssembly), so the photo never leaves your device—unlike most online converters, which upload your images to their servers.
- Why is the JPG larger than the original HEIC?
- HEIC is a newer, more efficient format. When the same image is re-encoded as JPG, it usually needs more bytes for the same visual quality. That is normal and expected.
- Does the conversion keep photo metadata like location?
- Most EXIF metadata is not carried over during conversion. If you plan to share the JPG, that is often a privacy plus; if you need the metadata, keep the original HEIC as well.
